Big-Day Beauty Basics

Don’t let putting on your face put you in a frenzy. Keep it calm by keeping your makeup simple

Between working with designers and celebrities – think Marc Jacobs and Sharon Stone – writing how-to beauty books and developing her own makeup line with Target, Sonia Kashuk worked hard for well-deserved industry expert status. From painting faces for magazine photo shoots to television appearances, Kashuk knows how to make women look their best on their big day.

How to Pick the Right Shade

For Kashuk, when it comes to putting your best face forward, stick to three steps. First your pallet needs to compliment the dress. Second, Kashuk advises, “Choose shades and textures you are comfortable wearing.” And she warns, “Now is not the time to try something new.” And like any good makeup artist will tell you, “Always get a trial so that there are no surprises on the big day.” Lastly single out your strengths. “Pick a feature you want to highlight.” Keep your pucker looking plump with a classic red lip balanced by a softer shimmery eye. Or flip the attention upward with more dramatic shading on your eyes and a softer mouth. For this look, Kashuk recommends a pretty pink berry-colored lip.

Two Must-Dos for the Big Day

It’s all about the shimmer for wedding-day beauty. “Shimmers always look beautiful on a bride because the gowns are usually very luminous,” Kashuk says. “So you need some of this shine on the face to work with the gown.” Her other must: Adding some weight to your wink. “A universally necessity for the wedding day is false eyelashes. They make all the difference.”

If Money Didn’t Matter

Kashuk’s big-buck piece of advice? “Hire a professional, but don’t let them take over your face.” Having a trial will allow you and your makeup artist to agree on how much is just enough.

“It’s not about the product you buy, it’s about the application,” she say. Money may not buy you the perfect look, but it can buy you the artist to create the masterpiece.
